Land Rover Freelander SE3

The Land Rover Freelander SE3 was the result of market research by the Rover Group in the late 1980s, which suggested they enter the compact SUV market segment. With a restricted product development budget, Rover looked for a partner to develop the project - codenamed CB40 – however Honda declined and created the CR-V instead. BMW, who took over Rover Group in 1994, was able to fund the project and production facilities at Solihull, finally making use of the old Rover SD1 assembly hall which had been mothballed some years earlier. The Freelander was launched in October 1997, quickly becoming Europe's best-selling four-wheel drive model. It was available in five-door estate and three-door softback, hardback, and commercial (van-like) versions. In 2004, Land Rover introduced an improved and upgraded Mark I model - which included a new interior, major external revisions, and a new face and rear. The last Freelanders sold in North America were 2005 models.
