Market research led the Rover Group to suggest that Land Rover could enter the compact SUV market segment in the late 1980s. They had a limited product development budget and sought a partner to assist in developing the CB40 project (named after Canley Building 40, where it was first thought up). However, their then-partner Honda declined and designed their own CR-V model instead.

The Rover Group continued with the CB40 project after BMW took their ownership in 1994, and in 2007 Autocar reported that early designs and sketches of the Freelander featured Hyundai badging. Freelander's design was the work of Gerry McGovern, who went on to become the head of design at Land Rover in the same year. The manufacturing process was intended to be outsourced to Valmet in Finland; however, BMW's acquisition of the Rover Group meant they decided to fund production facilities at Solihull, and took advantage of the old Rover SD1 assembly hall, which was not in use since the early 1980s.

The Freelander was released in October 1997 and was the most popular four-wheel drive in Europe until 2002. The last Freelanders sold in North America were 2005 models.

Model variations

The Freelander came in five-door estate and three-door softback (semi-convertible), hardback, and commercial (van-like) varieties. In 2004, it was upgraded, with a new interior and many external changes, including a new face and rear.
