The Rover Group conducted market research in the late 1980s, which suggested that Land Rover should enter the compact SUV market segment. Therefore, the company developed the project codenamed "CB40" in the early 90s. Once BMW took Rover Group in 1994, the project had the needed funds to proceed. According to Autocar, early designs of the Freelander had Hyundai badging, possibly due to a proposed tie-up between both makers. Gerry McGovern, who eventually became the head of design at Land Rover in 2007, designed the Freelander. Initially the production was planned to be subcontracted in Finland as BMW terminated the agreement after taking it over. For the Freelander production, the old Rover SD1 assembly hall in Solihull, which had been dormant since the early 1980s, was used. The Freelander was released in October 1997 and became the best-selling four-wheel drive in Europe until 2002. It sold until 2005 in North America as the last model. Model variations included a five-door estate and three-door softback (semi-convertible), hardback, and commercial (van-like) versions. In 2004, an improved and upgraded version of the Mark I was introduced, with a new interior and major external changes, including a new face and back.
