Land Rover Range Rover Sport Diesel
The Land Rover Range Rover Sport Diesel is a high-performance five-passenger SUV that has been sold since the summer of 2005. It shares its platform with the Land Rover Discovery (LR3 in North America), but is larger than the LR3/Discovery. Land Rover market it as a sports tourer, and the Range Rover Sport is 4.788 meters long, 2.170 meters wide (including the side mirrors), and about 1.8 tall. It is equipped with a supercharged 390 PS (287 kW/410 hp) 4.2 L AJ-V8 engine, making it the second most powerful vehicle in the company's history, and a normally-aspirated 4.4 L version with 300 PS (220 kW/295 hp) is also available. Both models come with a six-speed automatic transmission and have a fuel capacity of about 88 liters. According to the Premier Automotive Group, the Range Rover Sport can wade 70 cm of water.
In 2005, the Range Rover Sport was the target of a protest by Greenpeace due to the contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming that the vehicle's combustion of hydrocarbons would cause. Moreover, a test conducted late in 2005 with only 1 gallon of fuel in the tank resulted in the car covering barely 8 miles (roughly 30L/100km) before running out of gas and spluttering to a halt.
The Range Rover Sport first made its appearance in 2004, badged as the Range Stormer. It was a bright orange, low-slung, 3-door concept car that hinted at the styling of the subsequent production model. Although the production version became a five-door, that was still distinguishing itself from the standard Range Rover, it was not as radical as the concept model. While it is still selling well, it has raised questions over whether the model is actually adding sales or simply cannibalizing the Range Rover's sales.
