Lexus unveiled the all-new, next generation Lexus RX 350 at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle that pioneered the car-based luxury utility vehicle segment when it launched in 1998, is completely redesigned and will continue to set new benchmarks in areas that have made it the best-selling luxury utility vehicle: innovation, styling, performance, utility and comfort.
At the heart of the new Lexus RX is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that runs on a highly efficient Atkinson cycle and delivers a powerful 311 horsepower. It is mated to an 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission that offers instant shifts with no drop in engine revs, providing smooth acceleration and enhancing fuel economy.
Along with the Lexus RX 350, Lexus also unveiled the Lexus RX 450h hybrid. The second generation hybrid features an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with the 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on the highly efficient Atkinson cycle and a more efficient inverter. Combined, it provides a total system output of 295 horsepower, 27 more horsepower than the current generation RX hybrid.
Other features of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system have been added to improve efficiency. This includes an exhaust-heat recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time and a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system that reduces engine pumping losses. It also has the option of a front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drive system. Unlike a mechanical AWD system that reduces fuel efficiency, the RX 450h's rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking for more efficient battery charging.
