The all-new Lexus RX 450h hybrid was unveiled at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The updated model pioneers the car-based luxury utility vehicle segment, and continues to set new standards for innovation, styling, performance, utility and comfort. It boasts an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on an efficient Atkinson cycle, producing 295 horsepower.
To further improve efficiency, the Lexus Hybrid Drive features two new systems. An exhaust-heat recovery system reduces engine warm-up times, resulting in higher fuel economy and lower emissions. Additionally, a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system reduces engine pumping losses, improving economy even more.
The Lexus RX 450h has an optional front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drive system. Unlike mechanical AWD systems, the RX 450h's rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery efficiently.
