Lotus Elan 1962 posters

Lotus Elan

In October 1962, the British Motor Show saw the launch of the Lotus Elan, a revolutionary car for a new decade that signalled the start of the Swinging Sixties. It stood out from the offerings of other prestigious brands such as Jaguar, AC and Ferrari, with their big, powerful muscle cars, being far lighter and more modern. The Elan was a playful two-seater, with a fiberglass body, four-wheel independent suspension and a peachy power-to-weight ratio of 670kg. It was one of the first to feature a backbone tube chassis, electric windows, carpets, a heater and a fashionable wooden fascia. In 1973, the Lotus Elan Sprint offered even greater performance, with a 0-60mph time of just 6.6 seconds - a revolutionary speed at the time. With its pop-up headlights, chic style and place in popular culture, the Lotus Elan was the perfect embodiment of the era. It was featured on TV, driven around Carnaby Street, and even appeared on the cover of a magazine with Jimi Hendrix on the bonnet. Its popularity was such that it even made it into The Beatles’ song ‘A Day In The Life’.
