Lotus Elise 1996 posters

Lotus Elise Type 49

Based on the philosophy of its founder, Colin Chapman, of "Performance through light weight", Lotus creates cars of high performance with relatively low power outputs, but emphasizing on driving dynamics and pleasure. This approach makes the Lotus Elise unique, with production starting in 1996 and weighing only 720 kg (1,587 lb). In comparison, the Porsche Boxster, released in 1997, already weighs twice as much at 1,250 kg (2,756 lb). Despite its modest 120 bhp (89 kW) engine, the Elise is capable of sprinting to 60mph in just 5.8 seconds and also achieves better fuel efficiency and cornering than its heavier counterpart, that has an engine output of 201 bhp (149 kW). With a relatively low cost of ownership and modern look, this sports car is a very attractive vehicle for sports car lovers with a budget. Lotus produced various high-performance limited edition models of the Elise, such as Sport 135 (1998/9) with 145 bhp (108 kW), Sport 160 (2000) with 150-160 bhp (112-119 kW), and Sport 190 (190 bhp / 142 kW) for track use. Special editions such as the 50th Anniversary Edition (green/gold), Type 49 ("Gold Leaf" red and white two-tone) and Type 72 ("JPS" black/gold) paid homage to their history with their iconic colour schemes.
