Lotus Elite 1973 posters

Lotus Elite

The Lotus Elite was the first saloon car released by Lotus, equipped with a front engine and rear wheel drive. It utilizes a steel backbone chassis taking after the Elan and Europa models, along with 4-wheel independent coil spring suspension. Power steering as well as air conditioning could be purchased as an option in 1974. Serving as the foundation of the Eclat and the later Excel, the Elite II held a special "907" aluminum-block 4-valve, dual overhead cam, 4 cylinder, 2.0L engine. This engine was formerly used by Jensen-Healey and would later be the motivation behind the Lotus Esprit, natural as well as turbocharged. The Elite II was furbished with a 5-speed gearbox by default, however an automatic transmission became available from January 1976. Despite the curb weight being marginally over 2,000 lb (907 kg), the Elite and Elite II have ample bandwidth in acceleration and handling.
