Lotus Esprit Turbo 1980 posters

Lotus Esprit Turbo

In April 1981, Lotus introduced the S3 (Series 3) Esprit and Turbo Esprit models, both boasting a common chassis, inheriting much of the configuration of the Essex cars, and sharing a single set of body moulds. The Turbo Esprit was given a less complex wet-sump lubrication system, as well as a powerful engine and torque outputs. These cars had revised interiors with more headroom, combined with external features such as full aerodynamic body kits, 'turbo esprit' decals, more substantial bumpers, and 15" BBS alloy wheels. In April 1986, higher compression engines were added to the Giugiaro-styled Esprits, resulting in the 'HC' models. The naturally aspirated engine had an output of 172 horsepower (128 kW) and 160 lb·ft (220 N·m), and the Turbo Esprit HC boosted this to 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 220 lb·ft (300 N·m). The HCi variant used Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection as an emission control mechanism.
