Lotus Esprit V8

The Lotus Esprit V8 was introduced in 1996, featuring a self developed type 918 3.5L twin turbo engine in the front, tethered to a Renault transmission that was uprated by Derek Bell. This allowed for an impressive 355bhp (265 kW) and nearly 5 second 0 to 60 mph times. Unfortunately, this type of engine was prone to leaking cylinder liner problems. The GT3 joined the V8 models in 1997, with a 2.0L chargecooled, turbocharged engine, similar to the Italian market cars. 1998 saw another split in the V8 range, resulting in SE and GT specifications that had minor interior configurations changes, and comparable performance - the SE being more luxurious. In 1999, the ultimate Esprit was produced in the form of the Sport 350, limited to only 50 cars that featured 350 horsepower and new chassis and braking improvements. With its hand laid fibreglass body, the Esprit was capable of hitting 60 mph (100 km/h) in under 5 seconds, but weighed a hefty 1300 kg (2866 lb). Production of the Esprit ran until 2004, with 10,675 cars created over its 28 year production span. Lotus only made small changes over this period, such as switching to four round tail lights in 2002.
