Mazda 3 i-stop

The Mazda stand at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show was designed with the environment in mind. One way the company has achieved this is by developing i-stop, an idle-stop system that shuts down the engine when stationary, such as when in traffic jams, as a way to reduce fuel consumption. The Mazda 3 will be powered by the MZR 2.0L DISI engine with Mazda's i-stop system - the only one of its kind in the world. Developed solely by Mazda, it restarts the engine using the remaining energy in the pistons and a boost from the starter motor, which then injects fuel directly into the cylinder and ignites it to force the piston down. This system, when combined with a DISI engine, restarts the engine twice as fast and efficiently than with conventional idle-stop systems. Mazda has also used aerodynamic modifications and other measures, combined with i-stop, to help the new Mazda 3 achieve a fuel efficiency that is around 14 percent lower than its predecessor. When the engine is idle, i-stop automatically shuts down the engine and prepares it for a swift restart. The driver need only press the clutch for the engine to initiate the start procedure, with no input needed from the driver.
