Mazda 3 i-stop

The Mazda stand at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show is focused on the environment more than ever before. Mazda applied this sustainable approach to their engineering by introducing their unique idle-stop technology that cuts out the engine while stuck in traffic jams or similar scenarios, to reduce fuel consumption. The Mazda 3 will be equipped with Mazda's proprietary MZR 2.0L DISI engine along with their i-stop system, which is the only idle-stop system in the world that uses the remaining energy in the pistons to reignite - with a prompt jump-start from the starter motor - and fuel directly injected into the cylinder to help force down the pistons. The combination of the DISI engine and the i-stop system (initially dubbed as SISS: Smart Idle Stop System) make the engine restart twice as fast and quieter than conventional idle-stop systems. Along with the twin Mazda patented technologies, plus some aerodynamic upgrades, the Mazda 3 has been able to reduce its fuel consumption (overall) by 14 percent compared to its predecessor. With the idle-stop system enabled, the driver has no participation in the process. When the car is stopped (traffic signal, traffic jam etc.) the engine shuts off automatically and will restart again at the slightest press of the clutch.
