Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster

The MX-5 Miata, built by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan since 1989, is a popular sports car known as MX-5 in Oceania and Europe, and Roadster (under the Eunos marque until 1996) in Japan. With a grand total of 748,904 cars sold globally until the end of 2005, it is one of the world's best-selling sports cars. As of the third-generation 2006 model, Mazda consolidated worldwide (excluding Japan) marketing using the MX-5 name, though Mazda and enthusiasts in the USA still call it the Miata, derived from the Old High German word for "reward". The return of the sports roadster The designers of the MX-5 had a single objective in mind - to create a light, small roadster with minimal complexity, inspired by classic 1960s British roadsters such as the Triumph Spitfire, MG Midget, Lotus Elan, and Porsche 550 Spider. This type of car had become nearly extinct due to safety and anti-pollution regulations by the early 1980s. The MX-5 offered the market the return of the roadster with modern technology. It comes with a traditional FR (front-engine, rear-wheel-drive) layout with 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension, a manual transmission (plus an optional automatic option) and a light unibody shell. An additional unique feature of the MX-5 is the Powerplant Frame (PPF), which is a trusswork connecting the engine to the differential, providing a tight and responsive feel. Further features include limited slip differentials and antilock brakes, with traction control being an optional extra.
