Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster
The Mazda MX-5, commonly known as the MX-5 Miata (North America) or Roadster (Japan) is one of the best-selling sports cars in the world, with 748,904 cars sold as of the end of 2005. Developed by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan, the MX-5 was designed to be a lightweight roadster with a classic FR (front-engine, rear-wheel-drive) layout, 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension and a longitudinally mounted four-cylinder engine, as seen in the Triumph Spitfire, MG Midget, Lotus Elan, and Porsche 550 Spider from the 1960s. It can also be equipped with an optional automatic transmission, limited slip differentials, antilock brakes, and traction control. The MX-5 includes an innovative Powerplant Frame (PPF) which connects the engine to the differential for greater responsiveness and minimal flex.
