The Mazda MX-5 is a highly sought-after sports car, manufactured in Hiroshima, Japan, since 1989. It is recognized the world over as the MX-5 Miata in North America, the MX-5 in Oceania and Europe, and the Roadster (under the Eunos marque until 1996) in Japan. This car has become one of the most commonly owned sports cars in the world, with a total of 748,904 units sold by 2005's end. From 2006 onward, Mazda has sold this car with consistent branding by the name MX-5 across the world, though in the USA, it is recognized by the name Miata, which is an Old High German word meaning 'reward'. The return of the sports roadster This roadster was designed to bring back a sense of nostalgia to drivers, with modern updates. To be able to do so, it was created with the usual front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, together with 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension, a 4-cylinder engine joined to manual transmission (automatic transmissions are available as an option). The body is composed of a lightweight but sturdy unibody shell, bolstered by a unique frame known as the Powerplant Frame (PPF) that links the engine to the differential, providing greater torsional rigidity and a more responsive driving experience. Some MX-5s also boast limited slip differentials and antilock brakes, with traction control as an optional extra.
