The Mazda MX-5 is a beloved sports car that has been crafted in Hiroshima, Japan since 1989. It goes by many different names including MX-5 Miata (or simply Miata) for North American and MX-5 in Oceania and Europe, and Eunos Roadster until 1996 in Japan. The MX-5 is one of the most popular sports cars ever made, with over 748,904 of the vehicles sold by the end of 2005. Since 2006, Mazda has marketed the MX-5 worldwide, apart from Japan, under the same name, though some fans in the US still refer to it as the Miata, a name that translates to “reward” in Old High German.

The return of the sports roadster

The designers of the MX-5 were inspired by classic small British roadsters from the 1960s—such as the Triumph Spitfire, MG Midget, Lotus Elan, and Porsche 550 Spider. However, by the 1980s, roadsters had all but disappeared from the market due to the implementation of safety and anti-pollution regulations. The MX-5 then resurfaced, using modern technology and techniques to bring back the traditional roadster.

The MX-5 has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension. It also contains a longitudinally mounted four-cylinder engine, manual and automatic options, a lightweight unibody shell, and the Powerplant Frame, ensuring a tight, responsive feel. Some MX-5s have limited slip differentials and antilock brakes, with traction control as an additional option.
