The Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE test vehicle isfitted with revolutionary RENESIS rotary engine, improved aerodynamics, optimised tires and weight-saving measures, as well as a host of technologies for environmental compatibility. It features a dual-fuel system consisting of a high-pressure hydrogen tank and separate gasoline tank that can run on either. It is as reliable and easy to operate on hydrogen as on gasoline. The vehicle also has three layers of wet-on paint, a water-based paint that reduces emission of organic solvents, saves energy, and reduces CO2. For interior parts, plant-based plastic, which are an attractive alternative to plastics derived from fossil fuels, is used. Additionally, plant-based fibre-reinforced extrusion-moulded plastic from timber is used for quarter panels, reducing even more CO2 emissions. Low-resistance brakes and a fast-fill tandem master cylinder reduce brake drag, while the low-resistance hub carriers reduce friction to keep power losses to a minimum.
