McLaren MP4-12C GT3

The new McLaren MP4-12C GT3 is the first McLaren race car since the McLaren F1 GTR was retired from production in 1997. Developed by the combined expertise of McLaren Racing, McLaren Automotive, and CRS Racing, the 12C GT3 is based on the new MP4-12C high-performance sports car. Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren Group Chief Executive Officer, explained the purpose of creating the 12C GT3 race car: "McLaren has racing in its blood and it was a natural step to take our MP4-12C road car and turn it into the most reliable, efficient and easy to drive GT3 car." A team of engineers, designers, and test drivers with extensive experience in Formula 1 and GT racing have been assembled to adapt the 12C's carbon chassis to match racing requirements. Plans for a 2011 development programme were also announced. The ultimate goal of the creators of the 12C GT3 is to select a technical specification that ensures any driver is able to access the car's performance limit effortlessly. To that end, CRS Racing has been employed to make sure the 12C's design and development program is akin to what McLaren Racing employs in developing its Formula 1 cars – a decision that was made with the team's noteworthy record in GT3 racing in mind.
