Mercedes-Benz 190

The 180-190 and W128/W180 220-220S 'Ponton' models had a very similar appearance from the windscreen back to the six-cylinder, more expansive 220s-220S-220SE models. Even the top 220SE model, with its fuel injection, was hard to tell apart from the standard 180 due to its longer bonnet and wheelbase, as well as the extra chrome detailing. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz 300 W186 Adenauer flagship had a much larger frame and body, making it an entirely separate vehicle. The four-cylinder 180-190s were often employed as German taxis, with the shorter Pontons featuring parking clearance lights at the front bumper and top rear. Drivers could toggle the lights with a switch above the driver's knee to avoid draining the battery, especially during winter months. Heater air intakes were only present on the 120/121. The 190 remained almost unchanged throughout its production run, with subtle modification made for the 1957 models. The Mercedes star on the faux external radiator cap was now spring-loaded to lower risk of injury to pedestrians or pedestrians in the event of an accident. The following year, the star was attached to a ball base to give it its iconic look. The related roadster model, the R121 or 190SL, was in circulation from 1955 to 1963. In 1959, the grille and taillights were redesigned for the 1960 US model year, a design which was kept for its successors, the W110 "Fintail" models, introduced the following year.
