The Mercedes-Benz 220 a was part of the W187 lineup of luxury cars that debuted in the early-1950s. It was offered as a sedan, a coupe, and a cabriolet. All three variants came with a 2.2-liter (2195 cc/133 in³) straight-six engine that produced 80 horsepower (60 kW). Styling was similar to the 170 S but featured headlights that had been integrated into the fenders for a more modern appearance. The sedan version of the 220 was phased out in 1953, replaced by the W105/W180 line. The coupe and cabriolet versions continued production until August of 1955. Out of these two, the cabriolet models were the least popular, with only 1,278 and 997 sales of the "A" and "B" versions, respectively.
