Mercedes-Benz 240 D 3.0

The Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 Stroke-8 range of cars was introduced in 1968, replacing the W110 Fintail models. This was an upmarket executive mid-sized saloon model for Mercedes, offering an advanced level of comfort and refinement. The models using the W114 chassis offered straight-6 engines and were sold as the "230", "250", and "280" versions, while the W115 used straight-4 and straight-5 engines and were sold as the "200", "220", "230", and "240". This series hailed an era before Mercedes-Benz became focused on performance and power, although the 280 would have outdone most other cars of the time. The Stroke-8 cars featured many innovative elements such as a center console, a revised rear axle, inertia reel belts, a modern 4-hole padded steering wheel, and a distinctive exterior design featuring a lower bonnet-line, a more imposing grill, and lower placed headlamps. A coupé variant was introduced for this model in 1969, denoted by "C" in the model name, and featured a 19-inches shorter passenger compartment, a two-inch lower roof, and a longer boot. The 1969 250CE boasted Bosch D-jetronic fuel injection system, making it the first ever production Mercedes-Benz to use this system. This technology was then abandoned two years later, in favour of a mechanical system. The W114/5 series offered excellent handling and remarkable comfort, due to features such as the front subframes, wishbones, and the rear suspension system, which were good enough to be imported onto the R107 SL-Class Roadster of 1971.
