Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

The legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing is one of only few cars that have earned the title of "Eternal Youth". In February 1954, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer debuted this graceful and stylish sports car at the International Motor Sports Show in New York, setting off the inception of an automotive icon. Thanks to its singular "Gullwing" doors, the interior of the 300 SL was tightly sculpted and made for a sight to behold. The 300 SL also achieved acclaim as the "Sports Car of the Century" in 1999.

From the race-track to the road

Originally, the 300 SL was created as a purpose-built racing coupe (W 194) and wasted no time showing its strength. In 1952, it earned a sweep of the top 3 podium places at the Grand Prix in Bern and one-two finishes at Le Mans and the Nürburgring, all while taking first prize in the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. This success reignited Mercedes-Benz's legacy as a motorsports force, and gave rise to the 300 SL's release as a road car. Through the initiative of American importer Maximilian E. Hoffman, production started in 1954 with a total of 1,400 models produced before its discontinuation in 1957. Although no longer rolling out of the assembly line, the legacy of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing certainly follows.
