Mercedes-Benz 300CD Turbodiesel
The Mercedes-Benz W123 range of cars was produced from 1976 through 1986 and was the most successful Mercedes to date, selling over 2.5 million units before the W124 replaced it in 1985. Additionally, a small range of Mercedes-Benz W201 models was introduced in 1982.
Naming
The model naming reflected engine size, type of engine, and chassis type. W123s identified an engine type with "D" (diesel), "E" (Einspritzung fuel injection), "T" (Transport and Tourism estate/station wagon) or "C" (coupé).
Features
The W123 was the first Mercedes to have a factory-made station wagon (the T-model), whereas earlier models were modified to station wagons, and long-wheelbase ambulances and hearses were only available through private companies. The W123 300 TD turbodiesel was one of the first turbodiesel cars to be released on the European market. Owing to the peculiar power output band, it was only available with an automatic transmission. Long wheelbase models of the 250 and 240D were also available, with 7 seats, primarily for use as a taxi.
Additional features of the W123 included: ABS (not available on diesel models), retractable steering column, self-levelling suspension (station wagon only), safety dashboard and driver's airbag (post-1982/09), leather upholstery, wooden linings, 5-speed manual (European market only), 4-speed automatic/manual transmission, rear-facing extra seats (station wagon only), Standheizung, air-conditioning, automatic airconditioning, power windows (front and rear), headlamp wipers (European market only), Tempomat (cruise control), power steering (standard post-1982/08), seat heating, and CO converter (post-1984). Power-assisted brakes were standard on all W123s.
American version
The American-market W123s had several differences from their European counterparts due to US legislation. Notable differences include: larger bumpers, sealed-beam headlights and the ID tag location.
