Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbodiesel

The Mercedes Benz S-Class W126 was produced between 1979 and 1992. It was the most successful S-Class to date, with a total of more than 800,000 units sold. It was available in a long- (SEL, SDL) and short wheel base (SE, SD) sedan, as well as a coupé (SEC). It replaced the W116 model, including the Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9, with the option for the hydropneumatic suspension set as standard on the 560- models. Mercedes-Benz put a higher emphasis on fuel efficiency in the large V8-engined modelsfollowing the 1970s oil crisis. The W126 took automobile engineering, comfort, safety and technology to a new level, with many features such as airbags, traction control, ABS brakes, and a self-leveling suspension only available on the 500 and 560 models. It also came with innovative luxuries, such as courtesy lights on the underside of the doors and 5-way powered, heated seats with memory settings for two different people. The 500SEL had a significant impact in the United States, where demand for a more powerful version of the underpowered and expensive American specification 380 SE/SEL/SEC led to the establishment of a large grey market. Up to 25,000 grey market vehicles were sold each year in the early 1980s. The W126 was eventually replaced by the W140 model in 1992.
