Mercedes-Benz Biome Concept

At the 2010 Los Angeles Design Challenge, the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, presented a revolutionary concept of a vehicle integrated into the environment. Taking their inspiration from nature, the designers proposed a car created from seeds typecast in a nursery and emitting pure oxygen while in use. At the end of its service life, the BIOME can be reused as building material or composted. “As the inventor of the motor car, we wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future, which is created and functions in complete symbiosis with nature. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept is a natural technology hybrid, and forms part of our earth's ecosystem. It grows and thrives like the leaves on a tree,” said Hubert Lee, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad. This year, the competition posed the challenge of creating a safe and comfortable 2+2 compact car featuring good handling and a fashionable design with a maximum weight of 454 kg (1,000 lbs). To meet these requirements, Mercedes-Benz invented BioFibre, an ultrathin and sturdy material that makes up 875.5 lbs (around 394 kg) of the design. Through the use of proprietary DNA codes in the Mercedes star on the car's front and back, the interior and exterior of the BIOME is grown from its seeds and can be customised to customers' needs. It is powered by BioNectar4534, a solar-powered liquid chemical bond stored in the BioFibre material. To help generate energy, the company developed a technology that equips trees with special receptors to collect solar energy and turn it into BioNectar4534. Thanks to the use of green technologies, the BIOME blends seamlessly into the ecosystem. This conceives a new type of partnership with nature, where roads have BioNectar4534-equipped trees and the Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept produces oxygen, ultimately improving air quality.
