Mercedes-Benz Bionic Concept Car

DaimlerChrysler has developed a concept car which seeks to explore the potential of bionics for automobile development. Combining ground-breaking diesel engine technology with cutting-edge emission control methods, the Mercedes-Benz bionic car was able to meet impressive standards in fuel consumption and emissions. Showcasing the concept vehicle for the first time, DaimlerChrysler will present the bionic car at the upcoming Innovation Symposium in Washington. When engineering the bionic car, the design process explored nature for answers on how construct a vehicle that is aerodynamic, safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly. The tropical boxfish was used as a model due to its cube-shaped body, which confers great aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining its boxy shape. By studying this fish, the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre and the DaimlerChrysler Research department used a 1:4 scale model to achieve an unprecedented wind drag coefficient of 0.095. Far ahead of the industry standard for aerodynamic automobiles (Cd 0.09), the project proved a great success.
