Mercedes-Benz C 111-II Concept

The Mercedes-Benz C 111-II is a fascinating sports car icon, a laboratory on wheels for the development of the Wankel engine, a testing ground for new technologies, and a legendary record-breaking car. To mark its 50th anniversary in 2020, the vehicle features the improved quadruple-rotor variant (four times 602 ccm flow chamber volume) of the M 950 F rotary piston engine generating 257 kW (350 hp). Premiere The supersports car made its debut at the 40th Geneva Motor Show between 12 and 22 March 1970. Standing at only 1120-millimetres-high, the car has gullwing doors and a wheelbase of 2620 millimetres. It's constructed with a glass-fibre reinforced plastic body and sheet steel underbody frame, allowing it to reach a top speed of 300 km/h. To this day, the C 111-II remains a popular attraction and can be seen at the Fascination of Technology exhibition section of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Improved development The C 111-II was built upon the C 111 which was presented in autumn 1969. Its main feature is the quadruple-rotor Wankel engine, a powerful sports engine. The Design department, headed up by Bruno Sacco and Josef Gallitzendörfer, worked on the car in the summer of 1969. They improved the driver’s view by modifying the mudguards, roof and boot lid, while the aerodynamics were refined through wind tunnel measurements to decrease the drag by eight per cent. Inside, the C 111-II is a work of contemporary aesthetics. Further, its suitability for everyday use is showcased with features such as storage room for one large and two small suitcases from the Mercedes-Benz suitcase set.
