Mercedes-Benz C112 Concept

The Mercedes-Benz C111 was a series of experimental automobiles developed by the company in the 1960s and 1970s. It featured new engine technologies such as Wankel engines, Diesel engines, and turbochargers. Other notable features included signature gullwing doors and a plush interior with leather trim and air conditioning. The first C111 was completed in 1969 and sported a three-rotor Wankel engine powering a fiberglass body shell. Its successor in 1970 included a more powerful three-rotor engine, which can reportedly reach 180 mph (290 km/h). Subsequent models took a different route and focused on experimenting with better Diesel engines. A 230 HP 5-speed manual turbo-Diesel made its debut as part of the C111 and broke multiple records. Thanks to its aerodynamic bodywork that featured an impressive .191 air drag coefficient, it achieved a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h). Even more impressive is a 500 hp (372 kW) 4.8 L twin KKK-turbocharged V8 version breaking the record lap-speed at 250.958mph with Dr. Hans Leibold in 1 minute, 56.67 seconds on May 5, 1979. The C112 concept was showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991. It was optimized for performance with a 6.0 L V12 engine mounted in the middle. Despite having accepted 700 deposits, the company ultimately decided not to make it for production.
