Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG

The second generation C-Class came with a sporty design aesthetic, featuring a steeper nose and shorter rear than its predecessors. It was available in petrol engines ranging from 2.6 L to 3.2 L, plus four and five-cylinder Diesels with common rail direct injection and variable geometry turbochargers. Offering a six-speed manual gearbox as standard across the range – excluding the C 320 and C 270 CDI models – Mercedes-Benz widened the C-Class’ portfolio in 2001 with the launch of the T-Model station wagon and Sportcoupé body styles. Facing intense competition from lower-priced models, the Sportcoupé struggled to appeal to its intended target market and was subsequently taken out of the US lineup in 2005. This was also the time when new 1.8 L engines with superchargers were introduced, and referring to their horsepower level, named C 230K. The 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system was also available for the C 240 and C 320.
