Mercedes-Benz CClass

The second generation C-Class Sported a more athletic look than its predecessors, featuring a more steeply raked front and shorter rear. It was available at launch with a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains, and V6 petrol engines. All V6 engines had increased displacement to 2.6L and 3.2L, the latter producing 218 PS (160 kW/215 hp). Diesel powertrains came with common rail direct injection and variable geometry turbochargers. A six-speed manual transmission was standard in all but the C 320 and C 270 CDI models. Rarely seen at the time, the engine numbering no longer matched the engine displacements, evidenced by the 2.0L C 180, 2.6L C 240, and the 2.2L diesel C 200 CDI. The Mercedes lineup was expanded in 2001 to include the T-Modell station wagon and SportCoupé. The SportCoupé attempted to outplay the BMW Compact but failed to capture the attention of its intended younger market, due to its high prices, limited cabin space, and handling problems when compared to the sedan. It was later pulled from the US lineup in 2005. A 1.8L supercharged four-cylinder engine dubbed M271 was also introduced, and could be powered by natural gas. It was initially available in the C 230K sportcoupé, producing 193 PS (142 kW/190 hp). Additionally, 4MATIC four-wheel drive options were available for the C 240 and C 320.
