Mercedes-Benz CLK350

The Mercedes-Benz W209 cars have been produced since 2002 and are sold under the CLK-Class model name. It is based on the W203 C-Class and replaced the C208 CLK-Class after 2004. The W209 is available in two body styles, a coupe and a cabriolet, and with three engine options, a V6 (first CLK320 in 2004 and then CLK350), V8 (CLK500), and supercharged V8 (CLK55). Its cabriolet (denoted with an A, such as CLK500A) is equipped with a fully automated retractable soft top and a metal tonneau that can be raised and lowered from outside using the key fob.

Market position and competitors

The Mercedes-Benz CLK is designed to aim at the mid-luxury market for coupes and convertibles and it is the only 4-seat cabriolet from Mercedes. Its direct competitors in the cabriolet market are the Volvo C70 and Lexus SC430, although it is available with larger engines than those automobiles. The CLK is found between the BMW 3 series coupe/cabriolet and 6 series coupe/cabriolet in terms of position.

Characteristics

The CLK is designed to ensure that its handling is precise and its performance excellent even under harsh conditions. It is electronically limited to 135mph in the CLK350 and CLK500 models, and to 155mph in the CLK55 model, and this limitation can be felt as a 'ceiling' instead of an artificial fuel cutoff. Additionally, the Electronic Stability Control (ESP) and Antilock breaking system (ABS) provide precise handling and enable such feats as a 90' degree turn on a two lane intersection from 50mph. Although the ESP system can be turned off, it still prevents the wheels from spinning freely for activities such as drifting, meaning that the ESP system must be shut off via a factory test protocol that end-users can't enable.
