Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG F1 Safety Car
The Mercedes-Benz W209 range has been produced since 2002. These vehicles are labelled under the CLK-Class model name and are based on the W203 C-Class. These cars replaced the C208 CLK-Class post 2004, and it was the first car to bear the CLK moniker. The W209 model is offered in two body styles, a coupe and an cabriolet. It also has three engine types, a V6 (CLK320 in '04 and CLK350 later on), a V8 (CLK500) and a supercharged V8 (CLK55). The cabriolet (labelled with an ‘A’ such as CLK500A) has a fully-automatic retractable soft top that is covered with a reinforced tonneau and can be opened or shut with the touch of a button using the key fob.
Market position and competitors
The CLK was designed to meet the midsized luxury market demands for coupes and convertibles. This is the only four-seater cabriolet in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It competes directly with the Volvo C70 and the Lexus SC430. The CLK offers better performance than its competition with its bigger engines. It sits in between the BMW 3 series coupe/cabriolet and the 6 series coupe/cabriolet.
Characteristics
The CLK is a great car which offers impeccable handling with its precise steering even under extreme performance conditions and roads. Its performance is comparable to the best sports cars in the market. The CLK350 and CLK500 models deliver maximum speed of 135 mph while the CLK55 model has top speed of 155 mph. This speed limitation is felt as an inability to go faster instead of fuel cutoff mechanism seen in other vehicles. Electronic Stability Control (ESP) and Anti-lock breaking system (ABS) help control the manoeuvres made while driving, such as making a 90 degree turn at 50 mph, using just brakes and steering. The ESP system although can be deactivated manually, it does not let the tyres spin freely. This system does not permit drifting without manually turning the ESP off using a secret factory procedure that is not available to the users.
