On April 12, 2006, the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class made its world debut at the New York International Automobile Show. It comes equipped with unique features, setting the bar in its class. Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group, stated, "The new generation of the E-Class is again setting benchmarks in terms of power, performance and safety." Customers in Europe will be able to choose from an array of 29 models starting in June, and those in the U.S. a few weeks later. These include 16 sedans and 13 station wagons. In addition, drivers can enjoy the redesigned interior, including a new four-spoke steering wheel, color combinations, and a new climate control system.
Mercedes-Benz maintains that the E-Class is the safest vehicle in its class due to its various innovations. Maier attested, "One of the key features of the new-generation E-Class is its outstanding safety level. It is clearly the safest vehicle in the upper-range segment."
