Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

In 1991, Mercedes-Benz reintroduced a four-seater cabriolet after a twenty-year hiatus. At the start of the release of the Generation 124Class series saloon, the automaker offered the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet 300 CE-24. This was followed by the E 320 Cabriolet as well as the E 200, E 220, and the exclusive E 36 AMG Cabriolet. Although their production period began in 1991 and ended in 1997, only a total of 33,952 units were ever made with each model becoming a classic in its own right and a future automotive collectible. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet was engineered with the same exact features as its four-door counterpart that included an eccentric-sweep panoramic windscreen wiper, multi-link independent rear suspension, and shock absorber strut independent front suspension located by individual wishbones. The braking system was also identical to the Saloons. On the exterior, the Cabriolet showcased styling cues based on the Coupé that debuted in 1986. These traits included a shorter body than the Saloon with flatter front and rear screens, no B-pillars, and two doors. Still, the switch to open-topped was no easy feat and required 1000 modified or newly designed components for the utmost safety and quality that Mercedes-Benz is known for. Moreover, the A 124 and its droptop model were outfitted with a sophisticated protection system in the event of a rollover including an extendable/retractable, sensor-controlled linear rollover bar at the rear and reinforced A-pillars.
