Mercedes-Benz F 400 Carving Concept

DaimlerChrysler unveiled a unique concept vehicle at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz F 400 Carving Concept. It is packed with inventive systems designed to provide upcoming cars with improved active safety, dynamic handling control, and smarter driving experience. At the core of the F 400 Carving is a new system that can adjust the camber angle on the outer wheels from 0 to 20 degrees according to the road condition. By combining this system with specially created tires, it has been shown to give thirty per cent more lateral stability than fixed camber settings with conventional tires. This result is increased active safety and better grip on the road while cornering. Because of its active camber control, the F 400 Carving can reach up to 1.28 g of maximum lateral acceleration, surpassing 28 per cent of the performance of regular sports cars. This is achieved mainly thanks to an asymmetrical-tread tyre concept, where the inner part of the tyres contact the surface in curved paths, and the outer tread area gives good stability in straight roads. Finer details in both tread pattern and rubber blend have also been optimized for dynamic cornering and safe high-speed performances.
