Mercedes-Benz G-Class

In 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, otherwise known as the G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen, or Cross-Country Vehicle), was made available to the public. Developed by a joint effort of Steyr-Daimler-Puch, this series of sport utility vehicles is offered under the Mercedes-Benz brand and is still assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Mercedes' role in the project consists of providing the drivetrain and interior design for the civilian version, while Steyr retains distribution of the Puch name in various regions. History The very first G-Wagen was released back in 1979 and later went through a redesign in 1990 and an update in 1997. A new version was expected for 2007, yet it never surfaced and the current model continues to be manufactured in Graz, Austria, in an estimated amount of 4,000 to 6,000 units per year. W460/W461 The original W460/W461 G-Wagen debuted in 1979. It was offered in two wheelbase sizes and three body styles: a short-wheelbase convertible with two doors, a short-wheelbase wagon with two doors, and a four-door long-wheelbase wagon. The original G-Wagen quickly gained popularity amongst military personnel and offroad enthusiasts, selling over 50,000 units in the first ten years of its life. While the vehicle was technically illegal to import in the United States, certain dealerships such as Europa International were able to modify the W463s to meet the US's DOT regulations for around $135,000.
