Mini Cooper S 2000 posters

Mini Cooper S

The Mini Cooper S was a sportier version of the Mini, a small car produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 to 2000. As one of the most popular British-made cars, it came second after the Ford Model T in a worldwide poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century. It was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis (1906-88) for BMC and was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants in the United Kingdom and various other countries including Australia, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.

The Mini Mk I underwent three major updates: The Mk II, the Clubman, and the Mk III, and included various variations such as an estate car, a pickup truck, a van and the Mini Moke, a jeep-like buggy. The Mini Cooper and Cooper "S" were developed for racing and successfully competed in the Monte Carlo Rally, winning the rally three times.

Design and development

The Mini was designed in 1956 in response to the fuel crisis caused by the Suez Crisis. This two-door revolutionary and distinctive car was the Austin Drawing Office project number 15 and was created to fit within a box measuring 10 × 4 × 4 feet (3 × 1.2 × 1.2 m) with six feet (1.8 m) of passenger accommodation. The engine was a pre-existing unit to keep costs down. The designing team was remarkably small which included Issigonis, Jack Daniels, Chris Kingham, two engineering students and four draughtsmen. In October 1957, they produced the original prototype which was nicknamed 'The Orange Box' due to its orange colour.
