The MINI is a car produced by the automobile subsidiary of BMW since 2001. It is often referred to as 'The BMW MINI', 'The New MINI', or just 'MINI' to distinguish it from the 'classic Mini' which was manufactured by the British Motor Corporation from 1959 to 2000. The MINI is made in Cowley, Oxford, United Kingdom, at what was previously the Morris car plant. Models The MINI is available in seven models - the MINI One D, MINI One, MINI One Convertible, MINI Cooper, MINI Cooper S, MINI Cooper Convertible and MINI Cooper S Convertible. The MINI One is powered by a 1.4 liter Tritec engine in Portugal, and all other gas-powered MINIs use the 1.6 l version. In 2004, a soft-top convertible option was added to the range. The models also vary by styling and badging, such as the Cooper S' distinctive bonnet scoop for airflow above the intercooler and its twin exhausts under the center of the rear valance. On the other hand, the (non-S) Cooper features more chrome parts than the MINI One, and a single exhaust, while the MINI One/D has no visible exhaust pipes. In some markets, such as Australia and the US, only the MINI Cooper and Cooper S are available to purchase due to the MINI One's engine being deemed inadequate to power an air conditioner, necessary in warmer climates. However, the difference between the engines of the 'One' and 'Cooper' models is just a software change within the engine control unit - the 'One' is tuned for fuel efficiency and the 'Cooper' is tuned for a combination of power and economy. In Australia, around half of all MINI models sold are the Cooper S, and in the US about 70%.
