Mini John Cooper Works Challenge

MINI performance is ready to move to the next level with the all-new MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE. This MINI Cooper S model is built specifically for track use and is ready to race. It will make its debut public appearance at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt this year, with car deliveries expected in Spring 2008. The CHALLENGE brings a host of performance improvements, including higher top speed, increased torque, faster acceleration and better traction. All these are sourced from an engine optimisation of the standard MINI Cooper S with modifications like a re-developed twin-scroll turbocharger, modified pistons, air filter, air intake passage, catalytic converter, exhaust components, added electronic sensors and a new engine management system. The chassis and suspension have also been tweaked to let the CHALLENGE do what it does best. KW Automotive adjustable damper units are installed, as well as 17" Borbet wheels shod with exclusive Dunlop racing tyres. Body changes based on the John Cooper Works Aerodynamic Kit are also featured, with adjustable rear spoiler, rear diffuser and a performance front spoiler for increased downforce at higher speeds. The new braking system with its large four-piston calipers lets the car brake from 62 - 0mph in just 3.1 seconds. An air-pressure elevating system completes the modified vehicle which is 30kg lighter than its predecessor. Safety measures include a roll cage welded to the body of the car, equipped with RECARO bucket seats and a six-point safety belt plus the HANS (Head And Neck Support) system used in Formula 1 cars. Despite being designed for race participation, private owners may still find owning a MINI CHALLENGE car quite an attractive proposition. However, it will not be licensed for public roads, so is expected to retain its appeal with racing enthusiasts. The MINI Challenge race series has been held in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and New Zealand since 2004, and Australia will be joining in the fun in 2008. Race teams can receive the first MINI CHALLENGE cars from March 2008, with private customers getting theirs from June. The expected price is €49,900 inc. VAT, and an order form can be downloaded from 11 September 2007.
