Mini Knightsbridge

The Mini was a small car that was produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 to 2000. It was the most popular British-made car, and it has since been replaced by the New MINI which was launched back in 2001. The original model is unarguably an icon of the 1960s, and its innovative space-saving front-wheel-drive layout has significantly influenced a generation of car-makers.

In the international poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century, the Mini came in a close second after the Ford Model T.

Design and Development

The Mini was designed by the talented Sir Alec Issigonis (1906-88) for BMC as part of project ADO15 (Austin Drawing Office project number 15). The intention was to create a small car that could provide a solution to the fuel crisis that had begun in 1956, with the Suez oil crisis that had reduced oil supplies and subsequently caused a surge in demand for 'bubble cars'. Issigonis was brought back to BMC in 1955 to work on the task and draw up designs, with a team of just four draughtsmen, two engineering students, and two of his previous colleagues from Alvis and the Morris Minor.

Together, the team had established the car's basic design requirements - it had to fit within a 3m x 1.2m x 1.2m box and the passenger area had to occupy 6 feet (1.8 m) of the 10 foot (3m) length - as well as be affordable with the use of an existing engine from the time. This smaller car was eventually named 'The Orange Box' due to its original colour, and by October 1957 the prototype was completed.

The Mini Mk I went through three major updates during its production, including the Mk II, Clubman, and Mk III, with each having its own variations including an estate car, a pickup truck, a van, and the Mini Moke - a jeep-like buggy. The sportier versions, the Mini Cooper and Cooper "S", were also incredibly successful and ultimately won the Monte Carlo Rally an impressive three times.
