Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
The popular and well-known Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, also known as the "EVO", is Mitsubishi's flagship sports car. Descendent from the domesticated Lancer sedan, the Evolution offers a powerful turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive system and durable construction. Every generation of the Evo is designated with a Roman Numer, with nine model versions being released from 1993 to present.
The Evolution was originally designed for the Japanese market, but strong worldwide demand for the model led to it being available in the UK and other European countries from 1998. In 2003, Mitsubishi made the decision to export their model to the US which came equipped with a 286 hp turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive powertrain.
Mitsubishi is known to follow the same design pattern for the Evolution versions, based on the same platform as the Lancer. These particular models also feature Mitsubishi's Innovative Valve-timing-and-lift Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve timing. Japan-spec cars have a maximum output of 280 PS (276 hp) ; however, the real output for the IX can reach 320 PS in other markets, such as the UK, with an output of up to 405 bhp (302 kW). The lightweight flywheels used in this type of vehicle only weigh 6 kilos for quicker engine response compared to other cars.
Despite this, the Evo has been increasing in weight due to stricter safety and emissions regulations.
