The Mitsubishi Pajero (also known as the Mitsubishi Montero in North America and Spanish-speaking countries, and as Mitsubishi Shogun in the United Kingdom) is a four-wheel drive SUV built by Mitsubishi Motors. Its name Montero means "mountain warrior" in Spanish. The Pajero has gained great popularity worldwide, leading to other unrelated models being named after it, including the Pajero Mini (a keicar-sized SUV only available in Japan), and the Mitsubishi Pajero iO/Montero iO (similar in size to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, sold in Europe as the Pajero Pinin or Montero iO). The Japanese Mitsubishi Challenger was also renamed as the Pajero Sport and Montero Sport in most export markets. The first Pajero I prototype was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1973, and its second prototype, the Pajero II, followed five years later in 1978. Mitsubishi aimed to create an SUV that was not just a workhorse, but also a recreational vehicle, owing to its long history as Japan's biggest four wheel drive manufacturer before World War II. The first Pajero production model was launched in May 1982, initially as a three-door short wheelbase model with the option of either a metal or canvas top, and three engine options: a 2.0 liter gas, 2.3 liter naturally aspirated diesel, and a 2.3 liter turbocharged diesel. It came with a number of features that had previously been unseen on Japanese four-wheel drives, such as front double wishbone suspension with torsion bar springs, power steering, and suspension seats. Mitsubishi recognized the demand for a larger market, and released the longer wheel base, five-door model in February 1983. This came with two engine options; a 2.0 liter turbocharged gas and a 2.3 liter turbocharged diesel. The long wheelbase model also increased seating capacity to seven, with third row seats that could be folded to the sides for extra trunk space, or combined with the second row seats to form a bed. In June 1984, the Pajero was improved with higher horsepower/torque ratings for the turbo diesel engines, and standard four wheel disc brakes and adjustable shock absorbers for the long wheel base model. The Pajero's legacy for success in motor sport began in January 1983, when it made its debut in the Paris-Dakar Rally and placed first. Thanks to its great performance, the Pajero gained respect for its ruggedness, and this was reflected in its sales. Further refinements followed in April 1985 with the addition of a four-speed automatic transmission and ELR seatbelts, and a flagship two-tone paint job model was introduced in early 1987 with 15-inch light alloy wheels, front seat heaters, woolen seat covers, genuine leather headrests, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a sound system with radio/cassette. In 1988, a 3.0 liter SOHC V6 engine and a 2.5 liter turbo diesel engine with the first 4x4 intercooler were made available, and the long wheel base models gained a leaf spring rear suspension for a smoother ride.
