Mitsubishi Outlander European Version 2003 posters

Mitsubishi Outlander [EU]

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors. It is based on the Mitsubishi Lancer platform, but its engine is derived from the Mitsubishi Galant. Other vehicles mainly competing with the Outlander in the North American market are the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-7, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Pontiac Vibe, Saturn VUE, Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage and the Ford Escape/Mazda CX-5. It is the successor to the Challenger/Montero Sport as Mitsubishi's small SUV.

History

Designed by Olivier Boulay, the Outlander was first launched in North America in 2003. It was an adapted version of the already existing Mitsubishi Airtrek with a modified, sportier-looking front end. In Singapore and Brazil, the vehicle is referred to as the Mitsubishi Airtrek, while the rest of the world identifies it by its Outlander nameplate. Three trim levels are available in North America - LS, XLS and Limited (introduced in 2005). Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are offered for the various trims. The all-wheel drive Outlander carries normal (open) differentials for the front and rear axles and has a viscous coupling unit as its center differential.

The North American models come only with a 2.4 L I4 engine, yielding up to 160 hp and 162 ft·lbf of torque. A turbocharged engine is sacrificed in the North American markets, already being offered in the Airtrek. The 2005 model year, however, brought a 5-speed manual transmission to the LS trim. Other distinguishing feature of the Outlander is its Sportronic semi-automatic transmission system that allows drivers to shift gears up or down by pushing the shift lever up or down.
