The concept of an electric sports car is not a novel idea; one hundred years ago, a car that achieved 100 km/h was already making history. However, no effort has been made to look into the potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to transform into a sports car until now. Mitsubishi Motors has taken a different approach and introduced the sleek Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Concept at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. This concept car is easy to recognize for its removable roof, and it has zero on-road CO2 emissions.
The Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Concept is the result of a collaborative effort between designers from the Okazaki, Cypress, California, and Tokyo subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Motors. It is longer and taller than its impressive predecessor, the 2007 i MiEV Sport show car, and it has a more "tech" look with its teardrop-shaped exterior and a 'Jet Fighter' grille at the front. An electric motor with great acceleration power and high torque was added, as well as a lithium-ion battery pack located in the long wheelbase providing more stability.
