Building on its 35 years of electric vehicle development, Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled their first production electric vehicle for the North American market—the Mitsubishi i. This four-door 2012 model is based on the popular gasoline-powered Mitsubishi i from the Japanese market. Powered by Mitsubishi's Electric Vehicle (MiEV) technology, this zero tailpipe emission vehicle replaces traditional automotive systems such as the engine, transmission and fuel tank with advanced components like a lithium-ion battery, electric motor, and efficient battery charging system. The car has been sold in Japan since 2009, whereas the European-spec i-MiEV already started its production.
Mitsubishi aims to roll out the Mitsubishi i to its Western U.S. dealerships in November 2011, and throughout the northeastern market by March 2012 and to the rest of the nation before the end of the year. The car is expected to have an MSRP of around $30,000, not including federal and state financial incentives.
