The Nissan Pathfinder and Terrano are mid-size SUVs. The Pathfinder is sold in North America, first introduced in 1986, while in other parts of the world it was known as the Terrano. From its lineup, the Pathfinder sits between the Xterra and Murano. The foundational Pathfinder/Terrano platform is further divided into two generations, the WD21 and the R50. The Pathfinder saw its first two body styles in the North American market from 1986 to 1989, in two door and four door models (though the two door version is now rare). From this period, engines available included the Nissan VG30I V6 and Z24 I4. By 1990, the V6 was upgraded to fuel injection and the engine model VG30E, respectively developing 153 hp and 180 lb/ft torque. The first generation Pathfinder was produced until 1995, replaced by a second generation with rounded styling in 1996. The new design changed from frame on body construction to uni-body construction. Following a minor facelift for the 1999 1/2 model year, the 2001 Pathfinder was equipped with a 240 hp (179 kW) V6 engine, the VQ35DE. In 2004, Nissan finally unveiled a completely redesigned Pathfinder for the 2005 model year, now powered by a 4.0 L V6 engine VQ40DE (270 hp, 291 ft·lbf) and using the Nissan F-Alpha platform. Most models were built in Japan until 2003, before shifting production to an assembly plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. In the same year, Nissan debuted a large-size SUV - the Pathfinder Armada - which was unrelated to the traditional version. When the Pathfinder was redesigned in 2005, the name became internationally-recognized as it was sold in markets around the world.
