Nissan Titan

The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck produced in the American market by Nissan Motors. The truck shares the stretched Nissan F-Alpha platform with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, and is manufactured in Canton, Mississippi.

Market and sales

Nissan created the Titan to challenge the other market-leading full-size pickup trucks available, such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, and Toyota Tundra. Toyota had been struggling to gain traction in the North American full-size truck market since the 1993 debut of the T100 and the launch of the Tundra in 1999; the Titan's introduction saw Tundra sales hover just over 100,000 annually, while the Ram, Silverado/Sierra, and F-Series each sold over 400,000 and 900,000 units, respectively. After the first year of production (December 2003 to December 2004), the Nissan Titan sold 85,920 units, while the Dodge Ram decreased slightly and the F-150 jumped to nearly 950,000. 86,945 Titans were sold in 2005, and total Tundra sales for that year was recorded at 126,529.

Models and equipment

The Titan is powered by the 5.6 L VK56DE V8 engine generating 305 hp (227 kW) at 4900 rpm and 379 ft·lbf (514 N·m) of torque at 3600 rpm (upgraded to 317 HP and 385 ft-lb of torque in the 2007 model). It is offered as a rear wheel drive or four wheel drive with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Customers can select between a Crew Cab with a 5'7" bed or King (extended) Cab with a 6'5" bed.

Reception

The Titan was well-reviewed for its powerful engine, generous storage capacity, stylish exterior, and innovative features. It was recognized by Edmunds.com as the best full-size truck and nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award in 2004. However, it was also criticized for its limited array of body styles compared to other prominent trucks such as the F-Series, which it was designed to compete against. The Titan is only available with the V8 5.6 liter engine and two body styles, whereas the F-Series has many more configurations, a V6 regular cab, a longer bed, and even diesel options.
