Oldsmobile Aurora Indy Pace Car

The Oldsmobile Aurora, a luxury 4-door sedan, was introduced by Oldsmobile in 1995 to fill the void left by the discontinuation of the Toronado 2-door personal luxury coupe. It was built on the Cadillac-derived G platform shared also by the Buick Riviera. Following the 96' Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, the Aurora became the flagship of the Oldsmobile marque, having been built on rumors it could even become the namesake of the whole Oldsmobile brand. Second Generation Originally, the second generation Aurora was set for an upscale move, keeping its V8-only drivetrain and being based on Buick's new Riviera platform, thus allowing room for a four-door Eighty-Eight successor, called Antares. However, with no progress in the Riviera development viewpoint and Oldsmobile's financial troubles, the Antares had to be reengineered into what became the 2001 Aurora. These models featured the G platform, albeit a shorter wheelbase, the V6 LX-5 engine, and were then shared out across other GM divisions, the Buick Park Avenue and Lesabre, as well as the Pontiac Bonneville. The Aurora was produced from November 10, 1999 and had a total of 71,722 second-generation Auroras make their way off the assembly line (53,640 in 2001, 10,865 in 2002, and 7,217 in 2003). Engines The Aurora was available with the following engines:
  • 2001-2002 LX5 3.5 L (214 in³) V6, 215 hp @ 5600 rpm, 230 ft·lbf torque @ 4400 rpm.
  • 2001-2003 L47 4.0 L (244 in³) V8, 250 hp @ 5600 rpm, 260 ft·lbf torque @ 4400 rpm.
