Oldsmobile Silhouette OSV

The Oldsmobile Silhouette, along with its Pontiac Trans Sport (1990-2005) and Chevrolet Lumina APV (1990-2005) siblings, were a trio of minivans that were introduced for the 1990 model year. The first generation Silhouette was featured in the 1995 film Get Shorty, which referred to it as "The Cadillac of minivans." When the Oldsmobile brand was discontinued in 2004, it was replaced by the Buick Terraza in 2005.

Background

In an effort to compete with Chrysler's near-monopoly on the minivan market in the 1980s, General Motors had released their first-ever front-wheel drive minivans in 1990: the Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Trans Sport, and Chevrolet Lumina APV. Along with Chrysler's Town & Country, they were the first luxury minivans available. However, GM's first attempt at producing a minivan had failed to capture a significant portion of the market, as their rear-wheel drive, truck-based Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari, did not prove overly popular.

Second generation (1997-2004)

The redesigned 1997 Silhouette was rolled off the assembly line on August 6th, 1996, and assembled in Doraville, Georgia. Rather than repeating the errors of its current and past platforms, the company created an entirely new U-platform series of minivans to match the European market's need for narrower, slightly smaller vehicles. Its styling was much more conservative, and it was constructed of steel unibody. Despite this, their market share still remained low due to the criticism of the design of the "dustbuster" minivans.
